A healthy, active Christmas the way to go

Monday, 21 December 2009

Senator Guy Barnett today encouraged Tasmanians to buy healthy presents for the kids this Christmas. Something to get the kids, and the whole family, active and outdoors is the way to go. Summer is a great time to stay healthy.

“One in five children is overweight or obese in Australia, and obesity is costing us an estimated $58 billion per year. The average of two hours of television per day per child in Australia, not counting time on the computer or video games, is a recipe for disaster.

“We know that 40% of our children in Australia play no sport after school. We have to get them off the Play Station and out in the Play Ground or the back yard.

“Buying healthy presents at Christmas time is a great way of helping our kids to choose a healthy, active lifestyle and to establish the right habits for lifelong health. Something like a ball, a frisbee, beach gear, sports shoes or a gym membership.

“A healthy lifestyle includes physical exercise and forming the right eating habits. Christmas provides an opportunity to enjoy great food – and getting active is the best way to burn off those extra calories!
