Two weeks notice to close business

Friday, 18 December 2009

Liberal Senator Guy Barnett today voiced shock at the unprofessional and short notice given to Launceston Workplace Learning to close up shop by 31 December 2009, following their unsuccessful tender for funding for the next three years.

“After successfully completing a Government contract LWL have now been given just two weeks notice. It is a disgrace. How can small business prosper and do well when treated like this?” Senator Barnett asked.

“Are the three staff expected to be given two weeks notice instead of the contractual four weeks? The lease of the premises and other equipment cannot just be terminated without cost to the business. The government appears to have no intention of compensating them for this. It is unfair and a breach of due process.

“It appears that the Federal government via the Department of Education Employment and Workplace Relations is treating small business like this all around Australia.

“Launceston Workplace Learning was only notified on Wednesday that they had to close shop on 31 December, 2009. They were advised they were unsuccessful in their funding submission from the Australian Government to continue their successful program in building community awareness to create successful career transitions for young people.

“Representation on their board of management includes the University of Tasmania, Rural Skills Australia, Launceston City Council, Tasmanian Polytechnic, Youth Futures, ATC, Regional Development Australia (Tas) and Learning Services North.

“It appears this tragic display of ineptitude and breach of due process by the Government is systemic throughout Australia,” Senator Barnett said.
